22 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 22nd April [1898]. I was better but got up late. I went to lunch with old Miss Seymour at 12 Wilton St. She had a litte parti carré Lady Low (wife of Sir Hugh Low) & Mr G. Russell making up the 4. We had a pleasant little party & G.R. was amusing. He told us how he once heard the D. of St Albans say of a man “he was a cretonne”! I appears that G.R. is nephew & godson of the old Dss of Bedford & was amused to find she had also been my godmother. I said I could only just remember her—my mother having taken me when I was quite a small child to see her & how frightened I had been of the old lady in her big black bonnet wh she always wore in doors. She was dispensing tea—& was the member of “five o’cl tea”—which I remember my mother saying was a queer custom of hers. I asked G.R. whether it was true she had been forced to have tea because her husband has prevented her eating a hearty lunch as he thought it so unladylike to see a lady eat much. G.R. said he had not heard of it but knew the D. would not allow her to drink wine. I went from Miss Seymour’s to Half Moon St to see Arthur. Blanche’s carriage fetched me there & I drove to fetch Maria & we drove together. I called on Genl Sir Collingwood Dickson & saw him. He was kept at home by gout—otherwise jolly & smoking a big bad cigar as usual. Miss Oswell came to dinner & we worked at MS till bed time. My new maid Eliza Knapp came to me today– Mellan the 1st housemaid left me.
