26 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 26th [April 1898]. I wrote a French letter last night to Señor Sagasta the Prime Minister at Madrid whom I had known when we lived there to sympathise on the War & wish the Spaniards success. Tho not very fond of the Spaniards one cannot help sympathising with them when one sees the high handed bullying conduct of the Americans. I sent my letter to Mme de Riaño to deliver or not as she sees fit. Eda & I went at 11 o’cl to Wimborne house to superintend a sitting Elaine was giving Mlle Nordgren who was trying to improve a very bad pastel portrait of Elaine she had painted last year. We remained there till 1—& then I went to lunch with Blanche at Cav. Sqr. The family had arrived from Bessboro’ this morning. Having travelled all night they were all rather tired. I went from there to Half Moon St at 2.30 & found Arthur was going out at 3 in a bath chair. I saw him for a few moments. He was nervous & said he hated the thoughts of going– When I left him I went downstairs & hid in the study that I might watch him walk past & get into his chair. It seemed impossible to think he could be walking again after having seen him so desperately ill. As soon as he had set off with Nellie & the nurse & gone up towards Curzon St I walked up Piccadilly to the Park & watched to see him return home by Piccadilly. As I knew he would not have liked to think I was watching him so went into Green Park & there walked abreast of him in the distance. It was terrible to see how bent & aged he looked. I stood & watched him walk into his own house & then went home. It was a fine warm day but it began to rain almost as soon as I got home. Thank God he has been out of his house at last—& we have a reprieve. We must not look forward. Eda had been out to lunch—& returned home abt 7. Nellie dined with us. She said Arthur was not too tired & had liked his outing.
