1 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 1st June [1898]. Arthur does not seem quite so well today—but was on his couch as usual by 10 & I sat with him while he breakfasted. Mildred & Jack Mansell called abt 1 but he was asleep & could not see them so they said they would return later—& they did so after lunch but Arthur had gone back to his own room to rest so they gave it up for today. I went out for a walk at 3.30 just as far as Brook St to see Miss Jeffery at Blanche’s shop about some work. There were pelting showers at intervals all day just like April weather & it was cold. Mrs Jellico came to tea– Mr Herbert Thompson came to see me. He has just come back from a tour in Italy & lastly from Venice. Arthur Du Cane came abt 5.30. He has just been to Bere to see to things for Arthur & the latter was keen to know what is going on there. Then Mrs Jellico & Arthur Du Cane sat down to play bésique under Arthur Guest’s superintendence & I left them & went downstairs to see Louis DC. who came to see me– I walked with him up to Park Crescent to see his mother & left him there. I saw Richard his father & told him all we have settled for Maria—her maid &c—& found Maria had not told him a word about it! tho’ he returned home from the country yesterday. Nela accompanied me part of the way home & I hurried back to dinner. Mr C. Wyld dined with Nellie & me. When she went home I went & sat a few moments with Arthur who was in bed but just then awake—& then went to bed myself– He is beginning to be anxious expecting Rhuvon tomorrow.
