8 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 8th [June 1898]. This has been a day of failures. The only good thing has been that Arthur has been bright & cheerful. In the morning Merthyr & Theo came to call & Merthyr went to see Arthur & found him playing bésique with Rhuvon. Nelly went out to lunch. I was going to lunch with Blanche but as Rhuvon & Nelly both were out I could not go. So Kate & I lunched with Arthur—a nice little party– After lunch we 3 went to the drawing room—& he told me to give him a bit of paper & a pencil as he wanted to makes notes for some directions he wanted to give Bircham who was coming to him at 5.30. I then left him for a while & when I went back he said he was trying to remember what pieces of plate he had to leave in his will. He said he had no money to leave. All he has is in trust & settlements & that Rhuvon was residuary legatee. By this I know that he has sent to Bircham about his will. It was a very oppressive day & it rained every now & then so Kate & I put off walking out till late. Ivor called & sat with us some time chatting. Then Lady Bessborough called & remained a long time. When Kitty & I went up to tea with Arthur we found so many people with him we would not go in & settled to go up to Blanche instead—but Kitty wanted to see Mr Bircham as he left so we had to wait till 6.30. When he left Arthur he saw Kate & told her Arthur had said he thought the Dr ought to tell him the truth about himself on acct of his railway directorship—as he now fears he never will be able to sit on a board again. He however lay & watched Rhuvon & Mrs Jellico playing bésique till 8. Rhuvon, Nellie, Kate & I dined in the studio. Before dinner Kate & I tried to take a little walk but were driven in by large drops of rain.
