15 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 15th June [1898]. Found Arthur very cheery this morning. The boxes arrived from Bere with fresh cut flowers & I arranged them in the drawing room by Arthur’s couch—he superintended each vase as I put the flowers in water. We had lovely roses, carnations, blush peonies & seringa. It took me 2 hours to do it all. Then Arthur played bésique with Rhuvon till luncheon. After luncheon Irène Ponsonby called & saw Arthur. I went out for a walk. Went to Wimborne House to fetch a vol. of my mother’s journal (typed) which Ivor said Arthur might have to read. I found Ivor there he having come up from Ascot for the day. I deposited two Vols at home & then walked on to Kelchen an ironmonger in Oxford St to look for a dodge to prevent the front door slamming as it often does. I found one there & ordered it to be sent for Arthur to see. I returned home by 4.30. Mrs Jellico came & I gave her & Rhuvon tea– Bond came at 5 to give Arthur his bath. Mrs Alex. Bagot came to see me & also Jack Gordon—Lord Stanmores son. I did not let them stay long as I wanted to return to give Bond his tea. He was surprised & delighted to find Arthur so much better—not only in himself but locally & said “What would you say if I was a fool & had made a mistake about him? but I fear there is no mistake in this case—as we have examined under the microscope.” I asked him after his wife & he said she was not home yet from the hospital & was not yet recovered from the attempted operation & said “the same cloud hangs over me as over you”– When Bond left bésique was begun. Miss Oswell came & we worked together at the MSS till dinner—dined together & worked again till 10.30. I paid my evening visit to Nurse Papworth & then to bed.
