14 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 14th [June 1898]. I breakfasted before 9– Had my feet attended to by Mr Alexander & then at 10 walked off to Tottenham Court Road to look for some new wheels for Arthur’s couch & found some at “Wards” a maker of invalid furniture. Came home & ordered the dinner &c. At 11.30 Mlle Diamanti came & gave Nelly & me a lesson in French for an hour. Maria called in the hopes of seeing Arthur but could not do so as just at that moment he had a man on railway business with him, so she did not remain long. Nellie lunched out so Rhuvon & I were alone at lunch with Arthur who eat twice of lamb & green peas & enjoyed his food. We were sitting with him having coffee after lunch when in walked Theodora who brought him some grapes & had a little chat with him. At 3 Nellie came in & said she had arranged to go out of town on a visit to some friends for a couple of nights. She has not been sleeping well of late & feels she wants a change. She walked with me to Gros: St where I was 1½ hour in the hands of Dr Chamberlain the dentist. We returned home to tea at 5 when Nellie left for Tunbridge Wells. I & Rhuvon played patience to amuse Arthur. At 7 Miss Oswell came & we worked at reading over Henry’s MSS till dinner—she dined with Rhuvon & me & then we worked again till 10.30–
