17 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 17th [June 1898]. I slept after 12 last night despite the noise of the electricians on the roofs & went off this morning by 10 to the dentist. When I left him I walked up to Blanches but did not find her at home so I came home. Merthyr came to see Arthur & to meet Monty who came up from Ascot to see him & then returned there. I had a long talk with Merthyr who left at lunch time. Rhuvon, Nellie & I lunched with Arthur & I sat talking to him for some time after. Soon after 3 Maria called with Nela & she saw Arthur for a few minutes. I walked out. Went to see Hallam Murray about a letter I had from Mr G. Somes Layard who wants to write a short life of Henry for the Biographical Dicty & then returned home. Had tea at 4.30 for Bond who came at that hour to see Arthur & was satisfied with him. Mr Bircham also came to see him & Mr Beasley came on business & Mrs Jellico to play bésique. Mr Gould the surgeon came to see Arthur abt 6 & was astonished to find him so well & said he may even live a year. I went out to get some patterns of black silk for Emilia Riaño. Went to dine with Mr & Mrs Butler at 3 Connaught Place. Was taken to dinner by Sir Charles Crawford—sat next our host. Met also Bishop Barry—Vicar of St James’ Piccadilly & sat talking to him after dinner. Met also Mr & Lady Georgina Peel who said she had known a Mr Layard in former days—who turns out to be Henry. She is a daughter of Lord J. Russell. Home at 11–
