18 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 18th June [1898]. I breakfasted at 9 & went off to the dentist at 9.30. Rhuvon met me there & arranged with Dr Chamberlain to have his teeth put in order. When I left at 11 I went up to see Blanche at Cav. Sqr but only remained with her a very short time as I had to be home for my lesson of Mlle Diamanti. When she left I went to the drawing room & arranged flowers wh had come up from Bere—lovely sweet smelling peonies & also roses. Rhuvon went out to lunch. Nelly & I lunched with Arthur. It was a very hot day. Miss Oswell came about 3 & we retired to my bed room to read Henry’s MSS—but before we began I had a visit from the Bishop of Gibraltar & Mrs Sandford. Then we set to work & Miss Oswell read aloud till we both got very sleepy & we were glad when 5 o’cl came to stop & have tea– After we set to work with renewed vigour & by 7.30 we had finished our task. Miss Oswell dined with Nellie, Rhuvon & me & then packed Henry’s MSS in a tin box ready for me to send it over to the Bank of England on Tuesday night. It has been to me a labour of love to get Henry’s Memoirs copied in type & to go thro’ it all but I am relieved that it is done & shall be very glad when the original is safely deposited in the bank especially since last Wednesday night’s scare. I have still many documents to copy out at Venice to complete the thing but that will now have to wait till I can go there & only God knows when that will be.
