19 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 19th [June 1898]. I went to the ten oclock service at the German Chapel Royal– Home at 11– Rhuvon came as usual to breakfast with his father & after playing bésique with him went out for the day. Nellie came in to lunch with Arthur & me. During lunch he referred to dress & then brought in the subject of turquoises & said—“I like women to wear turquoises.” Then pulling a little ring off his finger, he told me to put it on & said it had belonged to our mother who had told him it was given her when she was 8 years old—& he wished me to wear it. I felt it was his way of giving me a recollection of himself—& he chose that moment so as to avoid any emotion. It is a small gold ring with a turquoise having a small diamond on either side of it & I mean to wear it always henceforth. Sir Henry Thompson came to tea & fell upon Nellie because she talked of drinking hot water with her meals—& was frantic when she said she often put brandy into it. He declared he never touch wine or spirits himself—& entered into an enumeration of his food digestion &c. Nellie seemed much amused, but I was glad to turn the conversation to other subjects & he left me in a better humour. Mr Bond & Mr Pierce Gould came at 5 to give Arthur his bath & to have an examination. They came down to tea with Nellie & me afterwards & gave a very cheering account of Arthur—found him much better in every way & decide to remove one of the tubes into the bladder & only have one. Mrs Jellico came to play bésique & Rhuvon returned. I walked up to 17 Cav. Sqr to see Blanche & then on to Park Crescent to see Maria who was sitting in her bed room—& rather shaky. Walked home by dinner time. Dined with Rhuvon. When he left at 10.30 had a little chat with Nurse Papworth & then to bed.
