25 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 25th [June 1898]. Arthur’s couch came back from Ward’s where it had been lengthened & had wheels put whereby it runs more easily. He was much pleased with it. Rhuvon breakfasted with Arthur & then went away till Monday. Nelly came down here abt 11 but went out to luncheon. Dacre Du Cane called to see if Merthyr was here—but he did not come till later. He Merthyr saw Arthur & sat a little while with him & he had a little talk with me. Lady Vivian came to see me & agreed to fetch me on Tuesday next & take me for a drive. Arthur & I had a quiet little luncheon together but he remained on his couch & did not use his wheeled chair. He asked me to play patience by him & I had begun a game when Mr Alfred Burton called so I left him with Arthur. When he left I finished the game & then went downstairs & read till tea time. Mrs Jellicoe came & we had a talk while Mr Bond was giving Arthur his bath. Mr Bond had tea with us & he & Mrs Jellicoe smoked cigarettes. Arthur came back to the drawing room on his couch & had his coffee. I had a visit from Mr & Lady Margaret Jenkins. They came to ask after Arthur—but he did not care to see them. When Bond was gone Mrs J. played bésique with Arthur so I went out for a walk. It had been thundery & showery all day but cleared in eveng. I walked to Park Crescent to see Maria & found her very well. I looked in on Blanche at Cav. Sqr & then came home. Arthur was alone & reading his eveng paper. Nelly came in soon after & she & I went down to dinner. At 9.30 we had a visit from Signor Gustave Frizzoni, Morelli’s great friend who is a great art connaisseur whom I was very glad to see. Bed at 10.30–
