3 July 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 3rd July [1898]. Arthur seemed weak less well. I breakfasted with him at 10 as Rhuvon is away & did not go to church at all. I wrote a good many letters. Blanche came abt 1 & stayed to luncheon—with me & Arthur but he was not up to much talking & as soon as he got back into the drawing room he fell asleep. Blanche & I went & sat in the patio & talked. She tried to persuade me I ought to read the Bible to Arthur now he is so ill & I told her I thought I had better leave him alone. I hope I am not wrong. I seem to feel the future does not depend on a few words said at the last moment. At 5 I went up to make tea for Mrs Jellicoe & Nelly. Mr Bond came at 5 & gave Arthur his bath. He came in after & said he thought him less well & that the desease is gaining & seemed to think he has taken a bad turn. It made me feel very worried at having settled to go to Chenies tomorrow for a night & I do not like leaving him. However now all is settled I think I had better go & get a little rest. Mr Bond stayed a long time chatting & smoking– Arthur was rather silent & seemed tired. He has had rather a difficulty in expressing himself all day & in finding the right words. Decidedly he is less well. I dined alone—& sat in the patio after & also with Nurse Papworth. After tea I walked to Maria’s & found her lying down in her room rather shaky. It is her birthday.
