14 July 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 14th [July 1898]. Dr Bond came a little after 9 this morning to give Arthur his bath & he got thro’ it well—& remained on the couch all the morning—5 hours– I breakfasted at 10 downstairs & then sat & worked. Rhuvon sat by his father all the morning. Blanche & Kate came & stayed to luncheon & Rhuvon & Nellie were also at lunch. B. & K. left at 3 to drive. Nellie went out, I remained in. Mr Bircham called & I had a long talk with him about Arthur’s former troubles with Adeline & their separation. He first seemed to take Adeline’s part & then spoke against her & called her selfish. He is a curious man. Col. Larkin came to ask after Arthur & he spoke to me also about the same subject & I told him I always knew the breach could not be healed & that Adeline had behaved very badly at that time—but now I think on looking back on it that she was mad then. Both Bircham & Larkin spoke of Arthur with great devotion. Lady Vivian came to tea & her girl Violet & then I went for a walk. Went to Cav. Sqr & saw Blanche & Kate. Edward & the girls have gone to Ireland. Blanche walked a little way back with me when I came home to dinner with Rhuvon. Nellie dined out. Talked with Rhuvon till 10 & when he left I went to Arthur’s room. He seems very ill– It is terrible to see– Bed at 11– Monty came home this evening just before dinner time.
