1 August 1898 — Hatfield
Monday. 1st August [1898]. Busy morning helping the girls to clean & arrange Reggie’s bedroom—this took up the morning. After lunch we all sat & talked & worked. At 4 Monty & Eda went off together– Nellie & I had tea at 5 & then walked to the Vineyard. There were hundreds of people in the Park enjoying their Bank Holiday. The weather was lovely & it was very warm. Dinner at 8. Bed at 10.30. This evening’s paper announced the death of Prince Bismarck which seems to have been rather unexpected tho he was an old man & had been ailing some time. He has been so long retired from politics that it will not make the stir it would otherwise have made. Like Gladstone he had over lived his time.
