5 August 1898 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Friday. 5th [August 1898]. Breakfasted in our bedrooms & before I was quite dressed a fly drove up containing Merthyr & Theodora who had come over from Inwood by an early train to Blandford & drove from there. They went over the furniture to show Nellie what belonged to them that they had lent to Arthur & they talked much over his affairs & the difficulties that were cropping up & the money that Arthur had borrowed of Merthyr—& which Rhuvon declares he cannot pay the interest of. I found Merthyr very irate with the latter & I am very much worried. Theo & M. lunched with Nellie & me & then drove off about 2 o’cl to return home– When they were gone Nellie & I set to work to set the house in order for letting it– Packed our own things & the pretty dainty cottage soon assumed quite a different aspect & the homey touches were gone. We assisted Mr Robinson to make his valuation by pointing out the different pieces of furniture wh belonged to Monty, to Theo & to me. After tea we took a walk towards Farmer Bedford’s & came back thro’ the fields– Rain threatened—& it was windy. Most of the corn is cut & what remains uncut is quite ripe & the crops are good. The root crops looked healthy. The country looked prettier than ever—the Bere church clock chimed out the quarters. It all seems so familiar—& yet we shall never see it again. Arthur Du Cane arrived in the evening & we did business with him & went to bed late.
