4 August 1898 — Hatfield
Thursday. 4th August [1898]. Leaving Monty & Eda more settled with their household Knapp & I went off to town by 4.55 train. Reggie accompanied me & left me at 25 Park Crescent where I went & spent an hour with Ola Du Cane & then went on to Waterloo Station to join Nellie, my maid & Jane the cook & we went by 12.30 train to Wareham. It was a dreadfully melancholy journey as it is our last journey to Bere to pack up & leave it for ever– It seems to bring Arthur’s loss more completely to our minds & to make us realize it. On the way I talked to Nellie about her & Mr Wyld’s affairs. They have agreed to wait until he can get some appointment & in the meanwhile Nellie will remain at 3 Savile Row & get some work to do—possibly help Blanche in her Garry Hill work. We got to Wareham at 3.30 & found old Battrick waiting for us with the van & the old fat pony. Nellie drove me in it & the maids came in a fly. We got to Bere abt 4.30. A lovely day & the country looking beautiful. Arthur’s little house looked as clean & pretty as possible—the tiny garden is full of flowers. His favorite carnation bed is in its beauty. His hats & fishing rods are in the hall just as if he might be expected to walk in any moment. It is very hard to bear. Nellie & I took a walk to the fields & looked at Cobb’s Hatch, & the Doctor’s Hatch which it was his particular pleasure to fish—standing in the midstream in his waders & one almost expected to see his tall thin form there. We came back & looked over the things in the Cottage & in the Retreat—the two houses he hired– We dined at 8—& soon after Mr Robinson the valuer arrived to make the valuation for duty—& so it is nearing the end– Bed soon after 10–
