3 August 1898 — Hatfield
Wednesday. 3rd [August 1898]. Lady Robert called on us after breakfast. She told us Lady Salisbury was to arrive from town today. I went to town by 12.10 train. Eda accompanied me to the station. I went straight home to Savile Row where I found Nellie & we went to Dieudonné a Restaurant in Ryder St to lunch. Mr C. Wyld met us there & after lunch he walked with me to Savile Row & I had a talk with him about his prospects of marrying Nellie & told him how Molly Alderson & I were ready to help with money. He was very nice—but did not like the idea of living on her relatives & said he must take time to consider & talk it over with Nellie. I returned to Hatfield by 4.20 train & got there by 5. Eda was at home & we had tea– Abt 8 my maid came to say she wanted to see Eda—& announced that the little parlour maid had caught Mrs Burt’s dirt. The poor girl was sobbing & we tried to pacify her but said she had better go off at once to her mother’s for 2 or 3 days & we sent for another girl to take her place who promises to come tomorrow. Before dinner I took a walk thro’ the Park with Reggie A. who returned here today.
