8 August 1898 — Branksome Dene, Poole, Dorset
Monday. 8th [August 1898]. Nela & Ruth left on visits to their friends. Merthyr walked over to see me abt 12 & I returned on foot with him to Seabera & lunched there with him & Theo & then they took me for a drive in Branksome Park & finally brought me back to Branksome Dene in time for 5 o’cl tea. I found a Mrs Lewis Ponsonby calling, a friend of Daisy’s, née Popham– I had an interview with my ex-cook Bertha who came over for the day from Stonepaine, where she is staying, to see me & to show me her baby. I arranged with her to have her niece as cook to take with me to Venice. I had much talk with Merthyr on Arthur’s affairs. I find that Rhuvon is obstinate about paying Merthyr the interest for the money & says he cannot yet pay the capital. His lawyer also makes a nasty insinuation that the loan was contracted to satisfy a woman with whom Arthur had taken up. Merthyr declared to me that tho’ he does not know positively, his belief is it was made in order to enable Arthur to pay the election of Cardiff. It is evident this is a piece of spite on the part of the Chapmans. Miss “Dor” Smith came to stay here today. Maria was very tired & went to bed directly after dinner.
