11 August 1898 — Hatfield
Thursday. 11th [August 1898]. Nellie & I walked up to the House abt 12 & I was alone with Lady Salisbury an hour & we talked over Nellie’s affairs. She fears that Mr Wild does not really wish to marry her but says that he ought not to see Nelly until it is settled one way or another. I told Nelly this & she says she will not let him come to see her if she is alone at Savile Row this winter. We returned home to lunch at 1– Lady S. left for Folkestone by the 3 o’cl train in the afternoon & at 3. Nellie & I went up to the house to join Lady Cranborne & her 3 children—2 little girls & a boy & we drove in “the French carriage” to the Vineyard & had tea there. Afterwards we went in a Punt on the river. Lady C. & Nellie rowed. I minded the children. Nellie & I walked home. Lady Cranborne dined with us & Monty. She is very pleasant & gentle but looks very delicate. The children are obedient & intelligent but not pretty & the boy looks very thin & wan & delicate.
