12 August 1898 — Hatfield
Friday. 12th [August 1898]. Nellie came to my room to say she must go to town to see Mr Bircham who had appointed 12 this morng. I said I would go with her—& we went by the 9.50 train & went to Savile Row. When Mr Bircham came he told us to our immense relief that Rhuvon has given up the idea of going to law with Merthyr about the loan & that they had come to an understanding. That there was no idea of making Arthur’s estate a bankrupt & that there was just money eno’ to pay the debts. Another disagreeable insinuation was also withdrawn—& we must now hope for peace. My sleep has been constantly disturbed the last week & by all this worry & I am greatly relieved. We had some luncheon & then went off to Kings X & returned by the 2.30 train to Hatfield. It was a tremendously hot day. At 5, the eldest Cranborne girl & her brother came to tea with us, & then we went out to the garden with them. We also met the baby & the 3 children amused themselves with “Nibs” whom we took out with us in a basket & we remained out till 7.30. Nellie & I came home & dined. Monty was out & did not return till 10.
