13 August 1898 — Hatfield
Saturday. 13th [August 1898]. A piping hot day. Had to shut up the house to keep it cool. “Mima” Cecil came & we settled to go to a tea picnic with her & her little brother in the afternoon. Wrote letters. Nellie had copies of Mr Bircham’s & Rhuvon’s correspondence which caused me to blush at the discourtesy shown by my nephew—a young man to a man twice his age. Mr B’s reply was kindly & considerate for the sake of his old friend Rhuvon’s father. I wrote to Mr B. to express my regret that he should receive such treatment from any member of my family & to entreat him not to give up the Executorship as I know Arthur would not have wished it. Lunched at 1. At 3.30 Nellie & I walked out to the House & found there the French carriage waiting to take us & the 2 Cecil children to our picnic. We drove to a farm of Lord Salisbury’s called Simonside about 3 miles off. We went into a small spinny but were driven out of it by the heat & the flies so we went off to a hayfield & found a nice place to sit. After tea we took a walk in the fields & then drove back to Hatfield by 6.30. We fetched out Nibs the Paraqueet & went & sat on the Terrace till 7.30. We were joined by the Baby. It was a very hot evening. Revd George Horner arrived about 8 to stay till Monday & help in tomorrow’s services.
