16 August 1898 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire | |
Tuesday. 16th [August 1898]. There was a tremendous thunderstorm which lasted all night—till 3 A.M. & a great deal of rain wh greatly cooled the air– I sat a long time with Cecil in his study explaining to him all the troubles there had been abt Arthur’s affairs. We lunched at 1—& then Kate & I went off by train to Uffington to pay a little visit to my uncle & Aunt Lord & Lady Lindsay. They met us at Uffington Station in their carriage & received us very kindly. The house was looking very pretty & the sight of the old place brought back many memories. Felicia took me to the garden & I saw the big trunk of the old Wisteria tree which used to cover the gardener’s house. The old one has died down & the great trunk is rotting fast but fresh shoots has come up from the roots & they bid fair to soon replace the old tree. I went over the old house & visited the well-known rooms—especially the little room which used to be At Felicia’s sitting room & where Henry asked me to marry him. How far away that time seems now—& I can hardly realize that I am the same person—& I have gone thro’ so many troubles since then. We had tea in the hall—& Evy Bertie the youngest daughter & the only one who lives at home joined us. We left abt 6 & Uncle Lindsay drove with us to Uffington Station & we got home abt 7. Monty Alderson had left by that time & returned to his home at Hatfield. In the evening Kate & I, the girls & Reggie went off to pay the Dean & Miss Ingram a visit & sat in their garden which they had lighted up with Mary Alderson’s Chinese lanterns lent for the occasion. Miss Ingram showed me her beautiful church work. I gave her some old Spanish church embroideries which she is adapting for use in the Cathedral. | |
