15 August 1898 — Hatfield
Monday. 15th August [1898]. I walked to the station to see Nellie off by the 11.10 train to London. There I met Dr van Someren the English Dr at Venice & Miss May Burns– The former had been staying at N. Minions with the Burns. He had attended her during her late attack of typhoid at Venice. She walked part of the way into Hatfield with me & there met her carriage & got into it & drove home. I went to the Chaplains House to get Knapp & my luggage off & went back to the Station with Monty Alderson & we went by 12.15 train to Peterboro’ to stay with his parents. Got there at 1.30 & walked from the station to the house in the Precincts. Found Kate & Cecil, Eda & Mary & Reggie at home & Charlie Eliot there. The latter was just leaving having concluded his visit & starting for Harrowgate. I walked with him to the station as soon as I had had luncheon. Connie was on the train from London & they went off together. I went back to the Precincts & accompanied Kate & her Monty to the antiquary shop where they bargained for some furniture. It was a very hot day & we dined out in the garden & Mary illuminated the garden with Chinese lanterns & then went to fetch the Dean & Miss Ingram to see it & they sat out with us talking.
