24 August 1898 — Hatfield
Wednesday. 24th [August 1898]. Nellie took me up to Hatfield House & I began to make a small watercolour copy of the Vandyke portraits of Earl of Northumberland & his wife & child a splendid picture in Lady Salisbury’s private sitting room– I remained there till 1 & then returned home to luncheon. After 5 o’cl tea I walked down to the station to meet the 5.35 train in hopes of finding Louis Du Cane. He did not arrive till an hour later. I took a short walk & returned to the station to meet him. I took him in to the Park & showed him the outside of the House & the gardens. We talked much of poor Arthur’s affairs & Rhuvon’s conduct about the loan Merthyr made to Arthur. Rhuvon is bring an action against Merthyr to set it aside & is also bringing an action against Mr Sam Bircham for some fancied wrong. When we got to the Chaplain’s House abt 7 Louis found his bag containing his garments had not arrived so we walked back to the station to enquire for it. We did not find it & it only turned up later in the evening.
