23 August 1898 — Hatfield
Tuesday. 23rd [August 1898]. Hallam went out early to look round the gardens & returned to breakfast at 8.30. I then walked with him to the station & saw him off by the 9.9 train for London– I slept very little last night & was very tired this morning & unable to do more than superintend Knapp making a chintz chair cover for Monty’s drawing room– It was very hot & sultry. Monty went out after tea & Nellie & I went for a long walk thro’ lovely country & beautiful solitary lanes– We went by several farms but met very few people. Spoke with a woman in a cornfield going home with her two little children. She told us what a splendid harvest it is this year & how thankful she was—for during the late scarcity her baker’s book had gone up 4/6 a week & out of the 14/ earned by her husband 10/6 had gone in bread alone– She had had to economise in firing & the whole family had gone to bed at 6 P.M. in order to save fuel & lighting. We got home at 8 & dined together. Monty returned abt 10 o’clock.
