22 August 1898 — Hatfield
Monday. 22nd [August 1898]. No news yet of poor Turk. Wrote letters. At 1 o’cl Nellie drove me in her cousin Lady Gwendolin’s little poney carriage to Warren Wood to lunch with Mr & Mrs Butler. They were very kind & Mr Butler showed us some of his beautiful collection of church stuffs & embroideries. At 3 we said we must leave as we wanted to drive to Potter’s Bar in search of Turk. We drove to the station there & were disappointed at getting no news. Thence to the Police station & heard that the dog found yesterday was a retriever. We drove sadly home & got there at 5. I found letters to say that Rhuvon has determined to go to law with Merthyr & to throw his father’s estate into bankruptcy. This makes me very miserable. I feel the slight to Arthur’s name & honor very deeply. After tea Nellie & I walked to the station. I wanted to see if Hallam Murray arrived to stay with us. Nellie went on to the police station to ask if there were news of Turk. I did not find Hallam nor Nellie any news so we returned home. Hallam arrived just in time for dinner.
