3 September 1898 — Branksome Dene, Poole, Dorset
Saturday. 3rd September [1898]. I went off with Ola to the station & went by a 12 train to Poole where Ola had something to see to. We went to Western House where Ola is to live this winter & be district nurse for Cornelia. It is a nice little old fashioned house & the room Ola is to have has a pretty chimney piece with a nice Dutch picture set in it. It evidently was the house of some well to do merchant in the day of Poole’s prosperity. We went on to Wimborne by 1.20 train. There a carriage from Canford met us & we got there while they were all at luncheon. They did not expect me not knowing I was coming over from B. Dene. I found Miss Oswell there—having been sent for to type write. Besides Ivor & Cornelia, there was Rosie, Ivor Jr & Oscar & his governess. After lunch I went with Ivor & sat in the garden to talk over the affair of Merthyr’s loan to Arthur about which Rhuvon is now going to law. I found him very much for Rhuvon’s side—& we had a long argument. Maria & Richard arrived at 3.30 having driven over from Bournemouth & then Richard had a talk with Ivor but I fear with little better result after my talk– A wheel chair was borrowed from the village for Maria & she was wheeled about the garden. Mr Martin the manager of Ivor’s iron works at Dowlais arrived to see Ivor on business. We congratulated him on the successful termination of the late strike of colliers which has been going on for so many months—& is so onerous to everyone. Maria & Richard left abt 5.30 & Ola & I went back by train—wh proved to be as late as it was yesterday & we were back at B. Dene just in time for dinner. Maria was not overtired by her excursion & sat out after dinner in the garden for some time. A lovely hot moonlit night.
