2 September 1898 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Friday. 2nd September [1898]. I left Inwood today, by 4.20 train from Henstridge. It was a lovely hot day. Augusta went off early to Sir Baker’s Ranston to see the “march past.” Nelly saw me off at the station & the train was ½ hour late. At Shillingstone the carriage I was in was filled by some smart ladies who were returning from an attempt to see the “march past.” They said they had seen nothing as it had taken place early in the morning & they were too late for it. One lady was so exhausted by the heat & fatigue that she nearly fainted & I had to administer brandy & water out of my tea basket, to restore her– I arrived at Bournemouth abt 1½ hour late & when I got to Branksome Dene it was just 8. The party is Maria & Richard & Ola & Daisy their daughters—& a Miss Marshall. Maria is very feeble & tottery—& went to bed very early. It was a lovely moonlit night and I walked in the garden with Ola till bed time.
