28 September 1898 — En route to Milan
Wednesday. 28th [September 1898]. Reached Bale at 6 A.M. Breakfasted there & after 1½ waiting went on to Milan. Had luggage examined in the train & so there was no delay at Chiasso. The hand bags were not examined at all. Met Miss Leigh Smith in the train & had a long talk with her abt the Brownings whom she is to meet at Florence tomorrow. The “model” Ginevra is to be married in Novr & it might then be possible to effect a reconciliation between Browning & his wife. I hope this may be so. We got to Milan abt 3. Went to Hotel Cavour—had some tea & then walked out. Went & sat awhile quietly in the Cathedral. Met Don Carlo d’Adda in the street. He is grown very old & hardly recognised me.
