4 October 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 4th [October 1898]. I went off by the morng train at 9.15 to Stanghella to spend the day with Css Pisani at Vescovana. I got there abt 12 just in time for her dinner. Found her considerably better than when I last saw her in Jany. We took a walk together in the garden after lunch—& rested an hour before dinner in our rooms– Then we dined at 7 & I left by 8.15 train & returned to Venice. When I got into the compartment reserved for ladies on starting I found a nice looking old lady seated there with white hair & very prettily dressed in violet all to match. She soon began to talk & told me she was going to spend the day in the country with some Italians at Battaglia. She was very communicative & told me she always went to Rome for the winter & how she had very nearly become a Roman Catholic. At Padua her friends met her & she left the carriage. On my return in the evening the door of the carriage opened & my old lady got in again delighted to see me & full of the pleasant day she had spent &c—& more talkative than ever. As we got near Venice she said she wondered whether her maid wd meet her as she never went anywhere alone & was nervous & frightened of the dark—so I promised to see her safe– At the station there was no one to meet her. Monty A. met me & we took care of the old lady till we saw her safe in the care of the porter of her Hotel.
