13 October 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 13th [October 1898]. We rose early & put out our flags & window hangings for the arrival in Venice of the King & Queen of Italy who arrived abt 8 A.M. They came from Monza to be here to receive the Emperor & Empress of Germany on their way to the East. Abt 12 the Strongs & Miss Sharp (the Du Cane late Governess) came here & Lady Gregory took them out in gondola to the station to see the arrival of the Germans—they then returned here quickly by the small canals to see the procession up the Grand Canal. It was a pretty sight—enlivened by the coloured Bissom & their rowers in costume. As soon as it had gone by we all lunched here.
