7 November 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 7th November [1898]. I am getting over my bad cold—but still was not up to breakfast. Wrote letters & sent cheques home to pay bills in morning. Mrs Eden called directly after lunch & took Augusta Gregory out shopping. At 3 I went out in gondola to pay calls but found no one at home. Took a turn in the Piazza & went & sat in S. Marks quietly for a little while & then went at 4.30 to tea at Mme Wolkoff’s on purpose to see her Aunt old Mrs O’Connell– Wolkoff was playing the piano when I arrived. He is a clever man—a Russian—who can do anything he chooses but he is very disagreeable & very queer. Mme Wolkoff is English—very quiet & amiable & kindly & consumptive. Mrs O’Connell who is 81 is a nice old lady dignified in her stiff black silk dress & coiffeur like a Spanish mantilla. I returned home at 5. Dined at 7.30 & had usual Monday eveng tea party. Very few people came—the 2 Montalbas Clara & Hilda—Baron Krauss, B. & Bss Haan, Mr Woods, Trombini. They left at 11 P.M.
