5 December 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 5th December [1898]. After ordering dinner, giving out household stores &c I went to work at copying pictures with a camera lucida—a very tiring, back breaking process. Before lunch had a visit from Mrs Hulton who was very depressed. The Hultons have lost nearly all their fortune thro’ the dishonesty of an uncle a trustee—& have to leave their pretty apartment here & are going to Florence for the winter. After lunch painted a little while & then Augusta & I went out to the Eden’s garden to get some boughs of evergreen to entwine our rooms instead of flowers which are now over. Went to the Piazza to change money & to enquire about Augusta’s journey home next week. Then to tea with the Edens—& on to see Belmondo who is better & has been out of bed for 5 hours. Mr Woods RA & Clara Montalba dined with us & in the evening came the usual “tertulia”—Krauss’, Cozzi’s, Mrs Curtis & Mr Montalba & stayed till 11.30–
