7 December 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 7th [December 1898]. Had rather a cold & so remained in bed till lunch & as there was a thick white fog I gave up going to lunch with Mrs Brown & Mr Horatio B. & Augusta went alone. I lunched in the studio & then typed till 4 when Iduna came to see me—her husband being much better but she left before 5– Augusta & I had tea in studio & then sat in my bedroom & she read aloud whilst I put the last stitches into the 4th border I began years ago—I think in 92 or 93—& Henry then said I should never get thro’ them. I have done it altho’ it has taken a long time & I have given them to my sister Blanche for the gallery curtains at Bessboro– I have no heart to keep them for myself now– Mrs Hulton came & dined with us & after dinner told me all her many troubles, how her uncle had made away with her mother’s & her fortune—& how she & Mr H. have to economise & are going to Florence for the winter.
