31 December 1898 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Saturday. 31st [December 1898]. Here I am at the last day of what has been to me a very sad year. What will the next bring forth. One almost trembles at the thought. I have a great worry before me—certainly—Rhuvon’s lawsuits against Merthyr & Bircham which in today’s Times I see is fixed for 21st February. Certainly it seems as if there was to be no end of poor Arthur’s unhappy marriage & now his own son is trying to bring dishonor to his name. Why will people be so hard to one another just as tho’ life would last forever. If Rhuvon loses his suits he will not be happy nor can he be so even should he win. Well God knows best & we must leave it in his hands & hope for the best. I did all I could to smooth matters but in vain, & I must be patient. My one consolation is that dear Arthur is out of it all & is spared the pain of knowing abt it.
