2 January 1899 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Monday. 2nd [January 1899]. I breakfasted at 8 in my room. Lunched downstairs alone & then went to take leave of the Countess in her room—as she was not out of her bed. Left Stanghella by 11.55 slow train for Bologna. Arrived there at 2. Waited ½ hour & took the express to Rome via Florence. I was alone till I reached there when 2 ladies got into the carriage. There was a thick fog when I started from Vescovana & soon after leaving Bologna it disappeared. At Florence it was raining & blowing hard but it cleared before 12 P.M. when we reached Rome. Marchese Carlo Bentivoglio kindly met me & in Mme de Hurtado’s brougham took me to the Hotel d’Angleterre where I have rooms. Had some tea & got to bed. I have Knapp my maid with me & Byford the butler joined me from Venice. I used to stay at this hotel with Henry & we were here in Jany 94 on our last journey together.
