3 January 1899 — Rome
Tuesday. 3rd [January 1899]. Very lovely day—bright sun– Lady Vivian fetched me at 11.30 bringing her little girl with her puppy & we went for a walk up the Pinchio & there lay Rome under our feet as lovely as ever & I think more than ever of Henry & how he used to enjoy the view & loved the place– We walked back to the Palazzo Borghese where Lady V. is lodging & I lunched with her & her 3 girls & the gov. They have a delightful little apartment up at the top of the house with a little terrace to sit out on. I remained there till 3 when Mme de Hurtado called for me in her brougham & took me a drive, to leave cards on various friends & to take a turn on the Pincio. Then to her house where I had tea with Idita—sat & chatted & then walked back to the Hotel with Bentivoglio– Dined at 8 in Restaurant. Studied French grammar & went to bed.
