4 January 1899 — Rome
Wednesday. 4th [January 1899]. Breakfasted at 8. Wrote letters. Went out at 11 to the Hotel d’Europe to see Mr & Mrs Curtis who are there in nice sunny rooms. I told them I had just had a telegram from Naples from Fannie Browning in answer to my letter I wrote her to New York asking her to meet me somewhere & have a talk as to the possibility of her returning to her husband. I have answered that I will go there on Saty till Monday. They were very pleased to hear of it as they are anxious that the Brownings should come together again. It was rather a wrench to set off so soon on my journeys again but I feel bound to try it. I went on to Palazzo Borghese & lunched with Lady Vivian & at 3 she took me out driving. We went to the English cemetery & took fresh flowers for her to renew those she always has put there. It is a lovely spot & reminds me of a Turkish burying ground at Consple as it is all planted with cypresses. We afterwards drove me to the Brit. Embassy that I might leave a card on Lady Currie & then we went to call on Mme Westenberg wife of the Dutch Minister whom I have known many years. She received me very kindly & gave us tea—& then Louie brought me back to the hotel. I studied French grammar. Dined at 8. Lady Louisa Legge came into my room & paid me a visit after dinner. She is getting old & somewhat infirm but is as bright as ever– She is almost a dwarf & very ugly but very pleasant.
