5 January 1899 — Rome
Thursday. 5th [January 1899]. Got up at 7.30 & had my hair washed before breakfast. Being quite white it has to be washed often to keep it clean– At 11 had a visit from Miss Sharpe—the Du Cane old governess & then as I was feeling cold I went for an hours walk on the Pinchio & returned to lunch in the hotel at 1. At 2 I had a visit from Css Pasolini who was very pleasant & asked me to dine with her some day. At 3 Mlle Cozzi came to call for me & took me for a drive in Ersilia Canevaro’s carriage. We drove a long time in the Pinchio where the band was playing & there were a good many people—then we went to call on Mme Hurtado—& sat with her a little while & then met Pss Aguinaldo Buoncompagni a very handsome young woman & very pleasant manners. She spoken English perfectly as did her 2 little children who were with her. Then at 5 Maria took me to 38 Via Gregoriano where I was expected to tea by Lady Somers & Adeline Bedford & I stayed some time with them. Sir Philip Currie our Ambr came in to call & invited us all to go to dine with him & Lady C. on Sunday but Ly Somers said she was not well eno’ to dine out & I said I should be away. I walked back to the hotel by 7 o’cl.
