6 January 1899 — Rome | |
Friday. 6th [January 1899]. Breakfast at 8. Got a letter from Fannie Browning wh seemed to me so uncertain as to her movements that I thought I would go & consult Mrs Curtis about my going to Naples tomorrow. However the Curtis’ were out so I went for a walk on the Pincio & was just coming away when I met Lady Vivian & Baby & walked back with them to Palazzo Borghese & lunched with the Vivians. Young Lord V. was there having arrived yesterday night. After lunch I returned to the hotel & rested awhile & then went out for a walk up towards the Pinchio & back by the Corso. Went to see the Curtis & came with them to the conclusion that it is all right about Fannie Browning & so decided to go off tomorrow morng & took a return ticket of the hotel porter. Read & worked till 8 & then went down to dinner– Up came the Poet Laureate & Mrs Austin just as I sat down & they sat & talked to me whilst I dined—& then came to my sitting room & sat talking there– I got the Poet to write his signature in my auto: book. Mrs Austin was very nice & rather pretty & buxom & comfortable looking. The poet looked smaller than ever—was also very pleasant. They have just come from a tour in Sicily. | |
