15 January 1899 — Rome | |
Sunday. 15th [January 1899]. I went to the English Church in the V. Babuino & left before the sermon—& went to lunch at the Consulta with the Canevaros– Met there Conte Nicola Papadopoli, Conte Annibale Brandolin, Adl Gualterio & Canevaros secy Signor [illegible word]. It was pleasant & bright & I was glad to meet those Venetian friends. At 2 I walked to Pal. Sciarra to see Countess Pasolini who has a fine apartment there high up—but as there was a lift in the house it made no difference. I sat & talked some time to her & she lent me some Italian books which I took back to the hotel & looked through. I sat quiet the rest of the day being rather tired. Abt 6.30 the Curtis came to see me & sat some time chatting. At 8 I dined & Lady Louisa Legge sat with me part of the time. The old lady (Hardcastle) who travelled in the train with me in the autumn was at table d’hôte & as I bowed to her as she went out she came up & spoke to me & invited me to go & see her in her room wh I did not do—but played patience in my own room till bed time. | |
