14 January 1899 — Rome | |
Saturday. 14th January [1899]. Wrote letters in the morning. At 11.30 went to Palazzo Borghese to see how Lady V was. She was not up so I took her little girl for a walk with her white puppy on the Pinchio. It was a lovely day– Lady V & Violet met us there as we came back & I went to lunch with them & afterwards I drove with the latter. We went to the English cemetery where they put fresh flowers on Lord Vivian’s tomb—& then went for a drive to S. Paolo Tre Fontane the Trappist Convent beyond S. P. fuori le Mura. It is a pretty place a grove of Eucalyptus trees was planted there 20 years ago which changed the climate & made it healthy. The trees are already large & handsome. A Dutch monk showed us the 3 churches which were very uninteresting despite the story that S. Paul was beheaded there. The garden was pretty & all starred with white periwinkles. It was late before we got back into the town & the mists were rising. I left the carriage in the Corso & walked back to the hotel by which time it was 6. I had a visit from Emily Lady Ampthill who sat a long time chatting. I had not seen her for many years to talk to—we were friends as girls & now she has a large family to occupy her & besides her work at Court which gives her work. As soon as she left I dressed & went in a cab to Villino Buoncompagni to dine with the Hurtados & Bentivoglios. As my servant did not find a shut cab I had to go in an open one & it was so warm out that it was quite pleasant altho’ I was bare headed. After dinner we played patience & at 10 Mme Hurtado sent me back to the hotel in her carriage. | |
