20 January 1899 — Rome
Friday. 20th January [1899]. I was writing letters abt 11 when Countess Canevaro came in to see me & took me out walking. We went shopping in the Corso, & I left her at the Consulta at 12. I went on to 3 Venti Settembre to try & find Mme Castellani– At last I had got her right address but she was not at home so I walked back to the hotel & lunched at 1– At 3 Countess Canevaro & Maria Cozzi called for me in an open carriage & we drove to S. Giov. Laterano & went in to see the church where there is a lovely ceiling & fine mosaic apse also a beautiful cloister—so peaceful & quiet in the midst of a great town. Then we drove a little way along the Via Appia Nuova & cut across to the Appia anteia & went a little way along the street of tombs—& returned by the Porta S. Sebastiano to the Via Venti Settembre. Maria & I left Ersilia who was going on to pay a visit. I took a batte & returned to the hotel & got some tea to warm me for after our drive I felt cold. At 7 had a visit from the good & beautiful Dss di Sermoneta née Wilbraham, & her handsome daughter Donna Giovannella. The Dss was very cordial & affectionate—& I am much touched by all the kindness I receive. I dined at 8 & after the table d’hôte Lady Louisa Legge came & sat with me at my table bringing Lady Holdane who is staying here for a short time. Played patience till bed time.
