26 January 1899 — Rome | |
Thursday. 26th [January 1899]. Countess Canevaro called for me at 10 & we walked out together. I accompanied her to her dressmaker’s while she tried on a dress & then we walked a bit on the Pinchio. She told me her husband is very dissatisfied because the Curries did not give her her right place at dinner at the Embassy last Tuesday as the wife of the Min: for F.A. has a right to before an Ambassadress & they put the Austrian Ambs before Ersilia. We met the brother in law Duke Zoagli in the street & Ersilia told him about at wh he got quite excited & furious & I nearly laughed. Altho’ the Curries were wrong the affair is so trivial in itself it was absurd. I walked after leaving Ersilia at the Consulta, to Via Veneto to see Idita Bentivoglio who was not very well—then hurried back to lunch at the Hotel as I was to drive at 2 with Donna Laura Minghetti. However she left word she cd not come so I merely paid Lady L. Legge a visit & then wrote letters & sat quiet till 5 when I walked to Lady Vivian’s & had 5 o’cl tea there. At 6 I walked to Marchesa del Grillo who told me I should find her at that hour. She was not at home so I walked on to Da Laura’s—who did not receive—then returned to the Del Grillo who had not come home so I walked back to the hotel. I found my way as far as the Pantheon, then got puzzled & took a cab not knowing I was so near home. Dined in. | |
