27 January 1899 — Rome
Friday. 27th January [1899]. It was raining in the early morning. Wrote letters. At 11.30 I went to see Mrs Curtis to ask if she knew when P. Browning was likely to come to Rome so that I might speak to him abt his wife. She advised me to write to him so I returned to the hotel & did so. I hope I have done right, it is rather a delicate matter. I had a letter this morng from Fannie wanting me to hurry on the matter. I dressed & went off to a woman’s luncheon party given by Mme de Westenberg where I met Donna Laura, Lady Vivian, Mme de Brienen, a Mrs Ritchie (U.S.), Mrs Isaac Bronson, Marchesa Lavaggi & Mrs Story. We had a most recherché menu & all sorts of unwholesome things i.e. Paté de foie gras, truffles &c of wh I eat sparingly but it was all first rate. After lunch M. Westenberg was admitted. Countess Canevaro & Maria Cozzi fetched me for a drive & we left many cards & went to Mrs Storey’s afternoon tea at Palazzo Barberini. Then met the Vivians—& parted from Ersilia. I went for a short time to see Mme de Hurtado where I found Pss Arduino Buoncompagni as usual at that hour– There was more talk about the ball at “Pss Jane’s” & fresh complications had taken place. Evidently the ball had not been a great success. Came in, rested, & then paid Lady L. Legge a visit who is still in bed—& went to dine with Vivians. Lord V. was at home & Mr Kitson a new attaché of our Embassy dined also. I came in at 10. It was raining hard. The weather is very showery.
