28 January 1899 — Rome
Saturday. 28th [January 1899]. Remained indoors & wrote letters. Paid a visit to Lady Louisa Legge who is still in bed. Lunched in. At 2 Donna Laura called for me & took me driving in her carriage. It rained hard the whole time & we went with the hood of the carriage up. We called on the Dss of Sermoneta & saw her. She promises to take me one day to her place in the country. By 5 I was back at the hotel. Went again to see Lady Louisa. In her room I met a very handsome woman a Mrs Robinson—of Australian birth who had just married a Mr Freemantle—brother of Sir Charles Govr of Malta. She had lovely white hair & beautiful dark eyes & eyebrows—& is still quite young. I went to dine with the Hurtados at 7.30 & played patience in the evening & returned home early—the rain still pouring down–
