31 January 1899 — Rome | |
Tuesday. 31st January [1899]. Went at 10 to the dressmaker & then returned & read & wrote till lunch time. Recd letters from Mrs Browning from Athens which I require in case of seeing her husband in order to bring them together– After lunch I went to call on Miss Harry Hertz to see her collection of pictures & there met Mme Mund & a Mr Heinman (German art critic) & Lady Renulf. The latter talked much of Henry as she had met him at the trial of Rassam for libel against Mr Budge, & Mr Renulf had been also concerned in it. She spoke with enthusiasm of Henry’s brave bearing. After this visit (by Via Sistina) I went to an upper story to see a Miss Gardener & Mrs Ramay. Only the former was at home & she was invalid on her sofa with gout. She talked to me first under the impression I was an American lady of her acquaintance & when I told my name & she realized me she was delighted & shook hands again with me—& wanted to jump up when I left. I walked to Via Venti Settembre & left a card on Mme Castellani & then returned to the hotel & had tea & a visit from Baronne Pasetti the Austrian Ambrs wife a charming person with kind friendly manners. | |
