5 February 1899 — Rome
Sunday. 5th [February 1899]. Went to morning service at ch. in Via Babuino. There met Lady Vivian & she carried me off to lunch with her in the Hotel Beausite where she has lovely rooms & has made them very pretty with some nice furniture of her own. At 2.30 I returned to my hotel—& during the afternoon I had many visitors—Mr Wagner, Mrs Story, Mme de Bülow, Lady Louisa Legge, & then Mr & Mrs Curtis who remained a long while chatting. Later, Ersilia Canevaro & Maria Cozzi also P. & Pss Trauttenberg, the Marchesa Villa Marina, & Ct & Css Gina Marcello. The Canevaros & Marcellos have lately quarrelled & there was an awkward moment as Mme Marcello seemed to wish to cut Ersilia who, however, shook hands with her & it passed off. The Spanish Ambassador also came. When all were gone I went to pay Lady Louisa Legge a visit & was called away to see Lady Vivian who came late. As I was dining so near her hotel she took me there in her carriage. Besides M. & Mme Hurtado & Idita there was only Lady Hilda Keppel. We played patience in the evening. Mme Hurtado did not seem very well tonight. I am afraid she will not live very long & fear another stroke for her.
