4 February 1899 — Rome | |
Saturday. 4th [February 1899]. I took a short walk on the Pincio before lunch. Mme Henrietta Castellani lunched with me in the Restaurant room. I had met Css Canevaro out walking & she had settled to take me out driving with her at 3 but she telephoned to say it was impossible after all so I went out for a walk round by the Corso & Via Nazionale– As I was passing the Hotel Beausite I met Lady Hilda Keppel & she begged me to go in to the Hotel to tea with her & her sisters Lady Susan Townley & Lady Margaret Keppel & I did so—& had a pleasant talk with them. Lady Margaret’s husband is a diplomat & now secy at Berlin. She is too delicate to bear the cold climate & is therefore here. Their last post was Lisbon where also were the Cariatis & we talked much of Aimée Cariati, Iduna Belmondo’s sister whom I had known so long. Lady Susan says poor Aimée is not happy with her husband—a marriage wh at first was such a happy one. When I left the Keppels I walked to Mme Hurtado’s close by & paid her a short visit & promised to dine with her tomorrow. Dined alone in Restaurant. Patience. | |
