3 February 1899 — Rome | |
Friday. 3rd [February 1899]. Wrote letters—read, worked– Lunched at 1. Expected Countess Pasolini at 2—she telephoned to say she wd not come till 2.30. She came then. We had much talk about a book plate she is going to have designed for me for my books. At 4.30 I went out for a walk. After a tremendous thunderstorm with hail wh we had in the night it was a much finer day. I walked down the Corso to the Hotel Suisse & went in to pay a visit to B. & Bss de Trauttenberg whom I found at home. He is Austrian Minister in Danemark—she is a Russian—apparently a clever woman & rather cracky. She talks incessantly tho’ pleasantly. She showed me some works she was modelling in wax & also others in a preparation of clay & oil. The worst of it is that she boasts tremendously & it was difficult to follow her accounts of all the things she had not & had done– However I spent a very pleasant hour there & then went on my way walked round to the Hotel Beausite, did not find Lady Vivian at home & then walked back to my hotel (Angleterre), & read till dinner. Dined at the same table with Mme de Bülow. This morning I had a visit from Mme Galetti (sister of Lady Monkswell)– I had not seen her for many years– She seems rather forlorn—cut off from her own kith & kin—married to a man who is poor & not much known. I believe he is a natural son of King Victor Emmanuele. Mr Hamilton Aidé also came to see me being in Rome for a short time. | |
