2 February 1899 — Rome
Thursday. 2nd February [1899]. Up at 8 as usual. Wrote letters. Had an answer from Mr Browning saying he was not coming to Rome yet & that he would be very glad to receive the message I have for him from Fannie, his wife. So I wrote him a long letter explaining it all. Idita Bentivoglio came to see me at 11 & then returned for me at 12 & took me to the Palazzo della Consulta where I lunched at 12.15 with the Canevaros, Ersilia having asked me this morning thro’ the telephone. I found only Maria Cozzi & 2 relations Conte Imperial & Marchesa Migliorati, besides my host. Canevaro seemed rather preoccupied– I spoke of Lord Currie & he did not respond with warmth– Ersilia also complained that Lady Currie has not been to her receptions. Evidently the Curries have not found the way to the Italian hearts. Ersilia even said that “Lord Currie est le plus [illegible word] de dans les ambassadeurs ici”. It was a very showery day. I drove back in a cab to the hotel at 2 & remained quiet till 4. Pss Arduino Buoncompagni called on me with excuses for having been out yesterday. Mrs Austin wife of the Poet Laureate also called. At 4 Ersilia Canevaro called on me & with Maria Cozzi we took a drive in the Borghese grounds & then went to tea at the Wilson tea room. After this they left me at Hotel Beausite where Lady Vivian now is. As she was not in I went on to see Mme Hurtado at the Villino Buoncompagni to thank her for her kindness to me yesterday. Then called in at the Beausite for a moment & saw Lady Vivian a moment & hurried back to the hotel. Dined in Company with Mme de Bülow. Patience—bed.
